Trimble has acquired Terasat Japan, one of the country’s largest virtual reference station (VRS) service providers, giving the company direct access to Japan’s high-precision positioning market.
The acquisition lets Trimble offer its VRS correction service directly in Japan, expanding real-time, centimeter-level positioning coverage for the geospatial, construction, automotive, and agriculture sectors. Terasat’s network draws on data from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan’s (GSI) Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network, which spans more than 1,300 stations across the Japanese archipelago.
“This is a major milestone in our global VRS network expansion,” said Jacek Pietruczanis, Trimble’s director of strategic marketing for positioning services. “Acquiring an established leader like Terasat Japan allows us to bypass the challenges of building a new network from the ground up. It also grants us immediate, vital access to mandated GSI data streams for surveying and construction for delivering the highest level of GNSS correction data, optimizing the precise, high-quality positioning that is essential for complex surveying and construction tasks. It also allows us to expand into mass-market applications like IoT and autonomous driving in Japan.”
Trimble VRS is a real-time network RTK correction service delivering GNSS data via cellular connection, typically achieving 2 cm horizontal and 3 cm vertical accuracy without requiring users to maintain their own base stations. The service uses full GNSS constellation tracking, which Trimble says supports reliable connectivity and faster convergence times in challenging environments such as urban canyons and dense tree canopy.
Terasat’s network has run on Trimble’s Pivot correction platform, which the companies say will smooth the transition. “Terasat’s network has long relied on Trimble’s Pivot system to deliver high-quality GNSS correction to our extensive customer base, making this a seamless transition,” said Mauro Fujii, CEO of Terasat Japan. “We look forward to leveraging Trimble’s global resources to continue serving our core industries, while expanding into new frontiers.”
With the addition of Japan, Trimble VRS networks now operate in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
