What’s cheaper than building your own constellation? Splitting one. On Monday, Space42 and Viasat agreed to formally establish Equatys, a shared satellite-and-ground-infrastructure company for D2D connectivity and advanced mobile satellite services. The cofounders plan to commit up to $1B in equity, $800M of it once the company is formed. “Think of Equatys as a shared infrastructure in space, and Space42 and Viasat will be their first two clients,” Space42 Managing Director Karim Michel Sabbagh told reporters Tuesday at World Space Business Week in Paris. Operators would share sats and ground infrastructure, but keep their own spectrum and customers. - The first phase will include fewer than 200 sats, which executives said is enough for continuous coverage up to ~50° to 55° latitude. - The architecture is designed to scale to 2,800 sats across 60 orbital planes and three altitude layers. - Executives are targeting service by the end of 2029—roughly a year past the initial 2025 goal of commercial rollout within three years. During the briefing, Viasat chair and CEO Mark Dankberg pitched the system as a fix for a problem carriers know well: dropped calls. Beyond remote regions, Equatys aims to fill metro-coverage gaps by briefly handing off calls to satellites before returning them to terrestrial networks, a capability Dankberg acknowledged doesn’t exist yet.
