Key takeaways
- Amazon Leo is adding six new Ariane 6 launches, expanding its total Arianespace commitment from 18 to 24 launches.
- Arianespace has delivered 100 Amazon Leo satellites to orbit across three missions in less than five months.
- Long-term launch agreements support hundreds of suppliers and thousands of highly skilled jobs across Europe.
Amazon Leo is expanding its launch commitment with Arianespace, adding six new Ariane 6 contracts and bringing total contracted launch capacity from 18 to 24 launches.
Amazon Leo is a key customer for Arianespace, the world’s first commercial launch service provider, and the new agreement extends what was already the largest commercial contract in the company's history. The expanded commitment provides a long-term demand signal that supports the continued ramp-up of Ariane 6 and helps Arianespace grow launch capacity for commercial and institutional customers.
Expanding Amazon Leo’s partnership with Arianespace
Amazon first signed with Arianespace in 2022, part of a record-breaking set of agreements to secure more than 80 launches. Arianespace flew its first mission for Amazon earlier this year, and has now delivered 100 Leo satellites to orbit across three missions.
The most recent mission, Leo Europe 3 (LE-03), deployed 36 satellites using upgraded P160C solid boosters developed by ArianeGroup, making it the largest Amazon Leo mission to date and the heaviest commercial payload ever launched on any rocket.
These new boosters increase Ariane 6's payload capacity by up to two metric tons, and Amazon Leo and Arianespace engineering teams are working side by side to further increase the number of satellites deployed per launch through vehicle upgrades as the constellation scales.
"Europe isn't just a region we are going to serve. Europe's launch infrastructure is part of the operational architecture of the Amazon Leo constellation," said Chris Weber, vice president of Amazon Leo business and product. "We committed early because we believed in what Arianespace was building, and they've executed mission after mission. Expanding from 18 to 24 launches reflects our confidence in Ariane 6 and our continued investment in European launch capability."
Ariane 6 is assembled and launched from French Guiana, but its supply chain runs across 13 European countries and more than 600 companies. Amazon Leo is Arianespace's largest single customer, and Oxford Economics estimates the associated EU spending will contribute €2.8 …
